Incomplete style vs complete style?
answers1: All martial arts are "complete styles" in as much as they
cover all aspects of protection, weapons, terrain, everything. They
must comply with the rules of survival. <br>
No fighting sports are complete. They remove the martial techniques,
and use the rest as a sport. They all must comply with the rules of
safety.
answers2: first you need to know how do you break down a style <br>
stand up <br>
ground <br>
striking <br>
grappling <br>
self defense <br>
trapping range <br>
close range <br>
mid range <br>
long range <br>
single opponents <br>
multiple opponents <br>
weapons defense <br>
weapons training how many weapons do you include in your training <br>
i am sure the list goes on depending upon how much you want to break
out each category <br>
<br>
<br>
i consider a complete style that encompass all of the above.
answers3: Pretty much what our friend Kokoro said. He pretty much
nailed it. I would include in a few others things like firearms
training but that could be "long range". <br>
What he said.
answers4: Kokoro gave a great answer. I might be inclined to take
weapons training off of that list. I would keep weapons defense on the
list though. Generally speaking weapons are a separate art in itself.
<br>
<br>
BBQ said something that I agree with partially. I won't call them
fillers, but traditional arts do teach things that has nothing to do
with "fighting" or self defense. Dojo etiquette has nothing to do with
self defense. How to tie a belt doesn't either. But how to tie a belt
on your gi to carry it home does have some practical self defense
applications. My judo instructor taught us how to tie our belts around
our gi after class ends. Then he taught why and how to use the obi,
and gi in self defense if we are attacked walking home. But one of the
points of traditional marts arts is to hand down traditions from one
generation to the next. It encompasses more than just self defense and
fighting. <br>
<br>
Some people have no desire to know any history, culture, terminology,
etc. That is fine. Then those people should find a place with a good
instructor that don't teach those things. <br>
<br>
If we go down kokoro's list that is a lot of things to teach and
cover.But it can be taught well in one dojo. But it will take time to
cover them all well. The more times you can train in the dojo the more
you will learn those things. If you time is limited you can still
learn them it will just take longer. Too many people today are in too
big of a hurry. That want everything instant and microwaved. <br>
<br>
examples: <br>
Bjj general speaking spends most of their training on the ground.
Muay thai you are not likely to learn that many throws or what to do
once on the ground. <br>
<br>
In traditional arts when taught correctly, not all do you learn
punches, kicks, throws, chokes (standing, kneeling, sitting, laying),
joint locks, pressure points, small joint manipulations, escapes,
weapons defense, and defensive strategies against multiple attackers.
Hopefully you learn something about the laws were you live and how or
what they view as self defense.
answers5: I agree with KW. But I have to disagree that there is too
much to learn. I personally think the problem is that there is too
much "filler" in traditional martial arts. That is, stuff you can do
away with and it won't make one bit of a difference in your overall
fighting abilities. <br>
<br>
Think about it... MMA fighters train in the three ranges of combat
(striking, clinching and grappling) and they are pretty good at it.
<br>
<br>
Edit: Answers like Jim R.'s makes no sense to me. He says sports (I
take it he means Muay Thai, Boxing, kickboxing, MMA... and anything
else that would be consider a sport) aren't complete because they have
to comply with safety. But yet, how does one practice "non-safe"
things effectively? How does one really practice being able to fight
with no rules so anything like eye gouging is allowed? Unless Jim's
going to really say that he practices full contact fighting with no
rules of any kind, and no ref, then how does he practice this stuff?
<br>
<br>
Sport fighting, especially MMA, is the closest thing we have to a real
fight without actually being a real fight. If you've practiced things
like eye gouging that is great, but unless you've been able to
practice it against a resisting partner in a real time fight, then I
don't see how you can truly say with confidence that you're proficient
at it... remember, your opponent can do it too.
answers6: A "complete" style is one that covers all ranges of combat
(kicking, punching, grappling) and includes weapons training. An
"incomplete" style is one that may or may not include weapons training
and focuses on one or two ranges of combat, but not all three.
answers7: There is no such thing as a complete style, just styles or
systems that are more well rounded than others. No style on Earth has
every single technique you could ever need.
answers8: KW hit it pretty much on the head. I'm just going to add
that even though most people refer to complete style as training the
three elements of combat, the actually complete style should also
address weapons(whether it's you or your opponent) and multiple
opponents. So I'd say it's about five elements.
answers9: I've never heard of anything like that. But complete for
what? In that case there are very few complete styles. Most styles
cover some form of fighting. Very few styles cover ALL of fighting. If
any styles I should say.

looks life like or real Abstract art-- the picture is mixed up but you
can still tell what the picture is about. For example,, people with
their heads where thier arms should be., or eyes on their chin ---you

Why do girls in beauty pageants wear makeup?
answers1: Nothing about pageants makes sense
answers2: 1: a girl has to look her absolute best at a beauty pageant,
and with all the lights shining on her her makeup has to be thicker
and darker than normal, otherwise she looks like a ghost. <br>
<br>
2: they sent invites to other galaxies and are just waiting for them to get here
answers3: 1. because the world has failed to cherish the beauty in
simplicity and nature <br>
2. rhetorical question lol
answers4: they dont make any sense and i agree with the miss universe
statement
answers5: they think make up look good its like a painting of some
sort to them beauty is natural
answers6: The girls in beauty pageants have to look their best if they
want to win. Plus it boosts confidence when you wear makeup because it
makes you feel prettier and better.
answers7: Because, from a long long distance away, people can't see
what the girl looks like (if she's all the way up front and person is
ALL the way in the back of the room), that's also a reason why people
in theatre's cake makeup on them. IF you're standing in front of them
then they obviously look relaly weird but from a distance, it looks
rather nice.

What is beauty?
answers1: It is SENSE...cannot be defined without loosing that sense
gradually.It might be only experienced ...
answers2: Beauty comes natural so don't worry about what people think
just be yourself.
answers3: John Keats wrote a poem, "Ode on a Grecian Urn". <br>
It contains these lines: <br>
''Beauty is truth, truth beauty, -- that is all <br>
Ye Know on earth, and all ye need to know."
answers4: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Beauty to me is the
beauty within. Yes there are physically beautiful people who are
really ugly on the inside, but the best is when ones beauty shines
through, kind, gentle, loving, honest and free..
answers5: I think beauty is someone who is not only beautiful
physically but also in personality, their interactions with others and
just the basic demeanor of the person. Beauty is not just one
attribute. Beauty is when you take a person and combine everything
about them and still think WOW!
answers6: There are many definitions, but one that I would like to
disclose is that beauty is purity.
answers7: Beauty is inside you.
answers8: i always think anything that is symmetrical is beautiful.
answers9: beauty is spiritual...it comes from God. beautiful is when
your soul is lifted up. the way we see beautiful is with our
intellectual eye and not our senses because the senses do not show us
the truth. how many times have you looked at something and it turned
out to be something else..that is your senses which do not show truth,
you comprehend it with your mind..or intellecual eye and then see the
truth or beauty. another example would be falling in love...most
people go for looks that we see through our eyes and usually break up
afterwards, but the ones that get to know the person and look at them
through the minds eye are the ones that see love
answers10: beauty is really related not only to physical appearance
but also inside.. your soul ..your thinking..your doing

answers3: pure simplicity, after using it for only one week my face
looked amazing!!!!!!! It's always sold out whenever I go, so I usually
stock up when I do get it. <br>
<br>
tips for some ppl: <br>
<br>
if you have oily skin wash your face with Lava soap, it makes your
skin really clear and doesn't dry it out. <br>
<br>
if you have trouble with built up cells on your face, cut a scotch
brite pad in half, soak it in water for an hour or so and LIGHTLY
grace your face with soap and water and it works better than any face
scrub. <br>

These two leave you with very very clear healthy skin.
answers4: There are different ranges of products and it really depends
on how much you wanna spend. For body, I really like Dove's body wash

stick with Biolage (spelling)? i'm not sure how to spell it because I
don't currently own a bottle and I just buy it when I see the package
I know it is that brand. O if u wanna smell good u should use the
lotion that is in the same line with your favorite perfume.

answers2: Each woman has a different taste. I for one like them to be
just normal but very many women like muscular guys. You shouldn't
change yourself for us women, but for yourself.
answers3: nicely actually they like the two. via primitive instict
they're attracted to good seems and muscular builds. extra beneficial
muscular tissues are like great breasts, they allure to extra
interest. yet there are women that are attracted to all categories of
adult adult males no rely how fat, skinny or grotesque. i take
advantage of to get alot of girls because of the fact I had a muscular
build yet now I allure to women because of the fact of my social

which skin care line works best?
answers1: I agree with Beatles that Aveeno products are wonderful for
the skin. I personally use ProActiv skin care products for my skin,
but quite frankly, everyone has their own skin type. I use proactiv
because I have combination skin (oily, dry and sensitve--I know, lucky
me right?). Most people would say that it is too harsh for their skin
but it works very well for me. It even lightened the blemishes I've
had from previous acne. They also cater to individual skin types such
as those that you mentioned. They have moisturizers that go on
non-greasy and they also provide nutrients so that your complexion is
brightened. If it is too harsh for you, try using it once a day.
That's what I did and it worked out well for me. I use the complete
3-step system at night and for mornings, I simply use only the skin
cleanser from proactiv then I'll moisturize with Aveeno's moisturizer
with SPF 15. <br>
<br>
If these do not work for you, I suggest that you see a dermatologist.
They'll be able to tell you what skin type you have and direct you to
the product that works best for your skin.
answers2: Clinique face wash and moisturizer amazing great for
sensitive skin and oily. <br>
also Aveeno products.

Should I use a makeup light?
answers1: i actually use a makeup light and i think it is better <br>
you can actually control the amount that you put on (even if its a
little bit and bare minerals) <br>
with the makeup light you start to see right away the areas youve put
makeup on. <br>
it does get a little warm but i put a fan on to keep me cool.
answers2: Do a light make up. But not too light were no one can notice
it. Try like a little powder (just a little though) maybe a light
brown or champagne eye shadow. With some light lip gloss. That is
really all you need. If you wear really heavy make up then it makes
you look trashy.
answers3: I've used a makeup light and i really liked it...however i
didn't use it because i had a problem with my makeup looking different
when i went outside....for that problem, i just took a freestanding
mirror and applied my makeup where i had natural light and that helped
me. If i feel like i have too much makeup on in the outside, i just
take a tissue and wipe my face lightly to remove some of the top
surface makeup and that seems to help.
answers4: You want to use natural light, which is sunlight or white
light. Sometime the bathroom light might give you this yellow
illumination that makes your makeup looks different when you go
outside. I never use the makeup light before, but usually makeup
artists say to use natural outside light.
answers5: Wouldn't a brush or something like that work better, the
light might get kind of hot against your skin.

how do you MAKE makeup?
answers1: coastalscents.com actually has stuff to make your own makeup
like kits and ingredients and all that jazz. its cheap too. good luck
xo
answers2: Home cosmetic-making has become a popular alternative to the
use of professional makeup, due in part to an increased awareness of
potentially unhealthy chemicals used in commercial products. You may
prefer to make your own makeup because you can have complete control
over the material you put on your skin, and may enjoy the level of
precision color-matching that can be achieved with home cosmetics.
Mineral makeup is a fashionable choice of homemade makeup and is used
for its smooth texture, body-friendly ingredients and ability to make
skin look beautiful. <br>
<br>
Things You'll Need: <br>
•Mineral makeup recipe <br>
•Untinted mineral makeup base <br>
•Iron oxide colors <br>
•Coffee grinder <br>
•Plastic kitchen wrap <br>
•Measuring spoons <br>
•Makeup applicator <br>
<br>
Step 1 Start with an untinted mineral makeup base. You can buy this
base pre-made from a mineral makeup supplier or you can make the base
yourself using one of the many recipes available on the web. The
untinted base should become 70 to 80 percent of your formula. <br>
<br>
Step 2 Put your untinted base aside. To achieve the color you want,
you will also need a color pigment base made from iron oxides. You can
purchase these from a mineral makeup supplier. <br>
<br>
Step 3 Play with mixtures of iron oxide color to match your skin. This
part of the process is all about trial-and-error, so make sure to
record exactly what iron oxide amounts produced each color
combination. <br>
<br>
Step 4 Blend your color pigment base using a coffee grinder, covering
it with plastic kitchen wrap to prevent mess. Make sure the iron
oxides are blended well. <br>
<br>
Step 5 Measure out the amount of color base you will add to your
untinted mineral makeup base. A little color will go a long way. You
may have to try out several combination percentages before achieving
the shade you want. <br>
<br>
Step 6 Add iron oxide color base to untinted mineral makeup base.
Blend well. <br>
<br>
Step 7 Test a tiny amount of makeup on your hand to see how your skin
reacts. Some people have allergic reactions to the sericite mica used
in mineral makeup. Observe your test spot for a day. Do not use this
kind of makeup if you are allergic. <br>
<br>
Step 8 Apply your new homemade mineral makeup to your face. Use your
preferred type of makeup applicator. The color should blend seamlessly
with your skin.

Does Japanese Hair Straightening damage the hair?
answers1: Japenese Hair Straightening is super damaging to the hair.
And very, very expensive. Not worth it.
answers2: When I had my hair japanese straightened, it made it feel so
much smoother and softer than before. It all depends on the person, if
you have a sensitive scalp, and lose hair easily, it MAY happen.
Although, it did not happen with me. Once the straightening wears off
(which takes a while) your hair may lose it's smoothness and get
frizzy, but you just have to get it straightened again.
answers3: All hair straightening damages hair. That's how it works. It
weakens curly hair so that it hangs down instead of curling up.

But, you can make your hair thicker, see Kris Jenner - Kim's mom, how
she does that! She set her top layers of hair in plastic curlers - had
been seen working away @ home or office with 6 curlers on. Blow dry.
Let them cool. Take the curlers out. Tousle with your hands and you're

5 Hair MYTHS - BUSTED <br>
http://www.gilmermirror.com/view/full_st… <br>
<br>
"Old wives' tales and ineffective products that claim to treat or
rehabilitate hair often have a placebo effect because people want them
to work," says Davis-Sivasothy, author of "Hair Care Rehab,"

I need Some Japanese Fashion stores------photos?
answers1: Japan is a highly fashion conscious country and has tended
to follow European Western fashions, but Japan is now becoming a
fashion leader and powerhouse in its own right. A lot of new young
fashion is being created on the street of Tokyo and other major
Japanese cities and this is influencing fashion around the world. This
so called "Street Fashion" is a term used to describe fashion where
the werer customises outfits by adopting a mixture of current and
traditional trends. More recently, Japanese hip-hop which has long
been present among underground Tokyo`s club scene, has influenced the
mainstream fashion industry. Street fashion is still prominent in
Japan today. Urban fashion districts in Tokyo such as Harajuku, Ginza,
Odaiba, Shinjuku and Shibuya are the centers for this fashion in
Japan. Some of the subculture attire that can be seen in these areas
include Lolita, Ganguro, Kogal, Bosozoku, Visual Kei and Cosplay. The
Japanese street fashion is known for its mix-match of different styles
and genres, and as such there is no single sought after brand that can
consistently appeal to all fashion groups. The three cornerstone
brands are often said to be Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto and Rei
Kawakubo. It wasn`t until the early 1990s that the industry saw a
blooming emergence of street fashion brands such as A Bathing Ape,
Evisu, and Uniqlo. Japan is also well known for its consumption of
foreign luxury brands such as Burberry, Louis Vuitton , Gucci and
Prada. Recently, Abercrombie & Fitch has become popular among aspiring
American preppy Japanese teen.

high paying jobs for people who study humanities? i love history, languages, philosophy, art, music, etc!?
answers1: I would suggest giving up "greed" and rethinking teaching,
especially at the college level. We are all different, of course,
but, based on my experience, i can assure you that the work is
fullfiling, interesting, reasonably well paid, and the hours are
hardly burdensome :) Working in the corporate world, currently
rampant with leadership which is pandemically psychopathic, is no
treat. Of course, you always get what you deserve so that you can
"learn your lessons" :)
answers2: Bartender, housecleaner, teamster. You probably won't go
much higher than that. Humanities degrees are pretty worthless.
<br>
<br>
You can use them to get your foot in the door at a big corporation and
climb the ladder.

Does forensics have any connection with humanities?
answers1: Forensics is the study of diagnosing crimes, and the
humanities address human relations, society, and the liberal arts. The
only connection would be in how patterns of behavior and personality
patterns are predictive of criminality.

College: humanities/social sciences degrees. what's anyone going to do with a humanities degree? obsolete?
answers1: I did a Bachelor of Social Science and Human Geography and
here I am, at age 23, earning $AU68,000 per annum, working in Social
Science and Human Geography in the private consulting sector. <br>
<br>
Social Science/Humanities are not useless, you just have to be smart
with how you use your degree to get a career.
answers2: First, understand that no area of knowledge is entirely
useless. There are quite a few jobs in the humanities that open up
every year. Unfortunately, about 10 to 20 times more people get
degrees in the humanities every year. <br>
<br>
The problem being that colleges decide their course offerings by how
much demand there is from teenagers. And far to many teenagers are
looking for majors with little if any math in them. Hence, too many
kids apply for the humanities each figuring they will be the exception
or they do not think at all. <br>
<br>
What society needs to do is to stop offering the humanities at public
schools. Public schools should offer majors based on the actual demand
from society. <br>
<br>
The private schools are far better at teaching the humanities and they
should be left to private schools who are free to teach whatever they
like.
answers3: I agree that no area of knowledge is useless, and I think
how you use the knowledge you obtain is just as important as what the
knowledge is. <br>
<br>
However, I disagree that humanities should only be taught at private
school, as then then people who cannot afford a private school are out
of luck.

Are hawaiian martial arts worth learning?
answers1: That is the only website I came across when I was looking
for Lua a while ago. From what I gather it's an art of bone breaking,
so would probably be similar to ninpo taijutsu. It certainly isn't
widely spread or advertised, so if you've got a class near you, go for
it, it's the only way you'll really know.
answers2: Well, Hawaiian Kempo is the striking style of UFC light
heavy weight Chuck Liddel.
answers3: hello, <br>

jiujitsu for standup". nowadays, there is plenty of groundwork as
well. very nice system with a lot of practical application. works well
with silat, kali, escrima, arnis. <br>
<br>
there are instructors in california, washington for sure. not sure
other states, but they are getting more and more widespread. <br>

striking <br>
bone breaking <br>
joint locks <br>
basic weapons <br>
throws (similar to greco wrestling) <br>
about equal parts hard/soft <br>

What major/minor should I have if I love poetry, literature, art, and creating art?
answers1: These things are hobbies, and will fulfill you as a person
but is not career choice. Educate yourself for a job people are
actually hiring for then can have money to explore your hobbies and
travel without becoming broke and bitter.
answers2: Comparative Arts <br>
Arts Management/Administration (business + art -> job working for
museum, performing art group, etc.) <br>
Art History <br>
Classical Civilization <br>
English <br>
Any Foreign Language <br>
Comparative Literature <br>
Anthropology <br>
Interior Design <br>
Philosophy <br>

What is the art of writing?
answers1: Writing is very much an art. Look at our scrawled notes
that we leave each other these days and compare them to the penmanship
used years ago. Learning how to write properly was actually taught in
school years ago. Read up on the art of calligraphy to see the
different fonts used and look at the beauty of the written word.
Years ago, books were handwritten by monks who took the time to make
each letter precise and to a certain standard. The first letter of a
word starting a book or chapter was often made very elaborately using
color and style. This is called illuminated script. Google some of
this or look in Wikipedia to see examples. Once you see the labour of
love put into these styles of writing, you will see that writing is
very much an art. And, even today, in some ways we still care. We
are selective of the color of ink in the gel pens we use or the
markers we write notes with. Just walking through the section of an
art supply store that carries various inks and pens will prove to you
that the art of writing is still very much alive.
answers2: because you can express yourself through it. And
coincidentally, that's what art is! Expression of one's self
answers3: Search the net for anything related to calligraphy and you
know why...:-)

What exactly is art deco?
answers1: Art Deco was a popular international design movement from
1925 until 1939, affecting the decorative arts such as architecture,
interior design, and industrial design, as well as the visual arts
such as fashion, painting, the graphic arts and film. It's very sleek,
yet extremely decorative. Think "roaring 1920's" and you'd be close.

answers1: Since it's a visual art, it probably has to be drama or
dance or something that involves a performance. For all schools it is
different, so check with our school guidance counselor. My school's
visual arts includes band, guitar class, music appreciation, and
simple art classes, but we aren't offered things like drama and dance.

What is acting black or acting white or whatever??
answers1: If you don't believe in interracial reproduction,your a
beget , and if you are raised with morals and don't see why people
would want to have "other" (culture and morals are shamed upon , why
does the rest of the world hate are lack of culture and morals?)
"OTHER''
answers2: i hear "acting white or black" all the time. <br>
Some blacks say to me that I "act white" because of the way i talk or
act. Or sometimes they're like where's your blackness?(I act like the
way my mother taught me. She says that i should be a classy lady.)
<br>
<br>
I always wondered what's acting black or acting white? I think its
silly. I'm defiantly not ghetto. (i don't live in it or act like one)
I don't care for rap, lol.( i love alternative and indie.) <br>
<br>
All i can say is to be yourself, that's all. Don't worry about what
people say to you. <br>
I ignore the ignorant people. <br>
<br>
People who says those things are well ignorant, sorry, but thats my
opinion. <br>
Just be you!!!
answers3: Logically there is no such thing as acting a certain race.
There is only an ignorant way of thinking that you can act a certain
race. When people usually say this, they are staying it by
stereotypical standards only. People who say this, or think this, it's
best not to hang around them because they are obviously ignorant and
ignorant.
answers4: I think when a person is black and they talk properly or use
the valley girl accent automatically this person is acting white. <br>
When a white person hangs around blacks and start to talk the way a
black person talks they are acting black.. Like you said some people
are not acting this is they way that they are. The problem is this
world is filled with ignorance and when ever you are not acting like
everyone else then your acting different.
answers5: i agree this is ignorant racism on both sides. we can act how we want

How to hook up new Home Theater.?
answers1: Hook up the BluRay using HDMI. Don't worry about getting a
"quality" cable. Just find a cheap one online and you will be fine.
Your surround system should have come with all the wires to hook up
the speakers. You may need another HDMI to connent the receiver to
the TV.
answers2: definitely use hdmi cables. they will give you the true 5.1
sound. dont cheap out on cables, but dont get expensive once either.
just go on ebay and get quality high speed hdmi cables for $15-$20
each. i got 2 ultra high speed HDMI cables(gold connectors too :) and
thick insulation)for $30 for both of them. They work superbly!! they
are really thick and sturdy, but still flexible, and it only cost me
$30 bucks for both of them! Just do a little research and you'll be
fine...
answers3: Buy your HDMI cables on ebay/amazon. Don't pay more than $20.
answers4: Connect HDMI from Blu-ray player and Home Theater to TV for
video then optical cable from Blu-ray player to Home theater for
surround sound.

Sunshine (the movie) in theatres?
answers1: Dont know...By the way did you get my question about the
book "Michelle Remembers" ?I got some questions I would like to run by
you personally Ive tried three times already r u getting them???
Running Deer.....
answers2: Yea, it's only being shown right now in larger cities and in
some independent theaters.It will most likely hit other theaters in a
2 or 3 weeks. They did the same thing for the recent Don Cheadle movie
"Talk To Me" which released in LA & NY 4 weeks ago and just him
independent theaters 2 weeks ago... like in Raleigh it's playing at 1
theater city-wide, not at any theater in surrounding areas like Durham
& Chapel Hill, and might not come out in the big name theaters in the
area. Sunshine, like Talk To Me, will definitely be worth the wait to
see though... even if you have to wait til it hits DVD cuz in the
summer the theaters only want the big buck bringing blockbusters.
answers3: It's probably on limited release. You will definitally be
able to find it in your local movie store when the time comes, but for
now you should either wait it out or find a theatre that is playing
the film.

many people here who are interested in poetry and sometimes even
display their own works.
answers2: problematic point. check out with google. that will might help!
answers3: I think so too. It would good. I'd use it. :)

can use Books and Authors in the Arts and Literature section. <br>
<br>
I'm still hoping for an Antiques section to come soon!!
answers5: Do suggest it. I think it is a great idea. You can use the

all it's own. I really enjoy poetry and would like to see it in
yahoo.

Female Poetry?
answers1: Margaret Atwood actually wrote short stories that changed
the original meaning behind the "traditional children's fairytales"
and made them into more darker and satiryical observations on the
psychological dynamics between men and woman. By transforming the
original fairytale into a different form, the author was challanging
the basic notions of male power (and control) of women's fertility and
women's freedom of choice. <br>
<br>
<br>
Margaret Atwood (b. 1939) the Canadian writer, is familiar to readers
all over the world as the author of some of the finest and most
influential fiction of the last few decades. Titles like The
Handmaid's Tale, Alias Grace, and The Robber Bride have won many
awards, sold in their millions and have been made into films. <br>
<br>
<br>
Maybe you wouldnt have to memorise the entire thing, perhaps just an
excerpt: <br>
<br>
Helen of Troy Does Countertop Dancing <br>
by Margaret Atwood <br>
<br>
<br>
The world is full of women <br>
who'd tell me I should be ashamed of myself <br>
if they had the chance. Quit dancing. <br>
Get some self-respect <br>
and a day job. <br>
Right. And minimum wage, <br>
and varicose veins, just standing <br>
in one place for eight hours <br>
behind a glass counter <br>
bundled up to the neck, instead of <br>
naked as a meat sandwich. <br>
Selling gloves, or something. <br>
Instead of what I do sell. <br>
You have to have talent <br>
to peddle a thing so nebulous <br>
and without material form. <br>
Exploited, they'd say. Yes, any way <br>
you cut it, but I've a choice <br>
of how, and I'll take the money. <br>
<br>
I do give value. <br>
Like preachers, I sell vision, <br>
like perfume ads, desire <br>
or its facsimile. Like jokes <br>
or war, it's all in the timing. <br>
I sell men back their worse suspicions: <br>
that everything's for sale, <br>
and piecemeal. They gaze at me and see <br>
a chain-saw murder just before it happens, <br>
when thigh, ***, inkblot, crevice, tit, and nipple <br>
are still connected. <br>
Such hatred leaps in them, <br>
my beery worshippers! That, or a bleary <br>
hopeless love. Seeing the rows of heads <br>
and upturned eyes, imploring <br>
but ready to snap at my ankles, <br>
I understand floods and earthquakes, and the urge <br>
to step on ants. I keep the beat, <br>
and dance for them because <br>
they can't. The music smells like foxes, <br>
crisp as heated metal <br>
searing the nostrils <br>
or humid as August, hazy and languorous <br>
as a looted city the day after, <br>
when all the rape's been done <br>
already, and the killing, <br>
and the survivors wander around <br>
looking for garbage <br>
to eat, and there's only a bleak exhaustion. <br>
Speaking of which, it's the smiling <br>
tires me out the most. <br>
This, and the pretence <br>
that I can't hear them. <br>
And I can't, because I'm after all <br>
a foreigner to them. <br>
The speech here is all warty gutturals, <br>
obvious as a slab of ham, <br>
but I come from the province of the gods <br>
where meanings are lilting and oblique. <br>
I don't let on to everyone, <br>
but lean close, and I'll whisper: <br>
My mother was raped by a holy swan. <br>
You believe that? You can take me out to dinner. <br>
That's what we tell all the husbands. <br>
There sure are a lot of dangerous birds around. <br>
<br>
Not that anyone here <br>
but you would understand. <br>
The rest of them would like to watch me <br>
and feel nothing. Reduce me to components <br>
as in a clock factory or abattoir. <br>
Crush out the mystery. <br>
Wall me up alive <br>
in my own body. <br>
They'd like to see through me, <br>
but nothing is more opaque <br>
than absolute transparency. <br>
Look--my feet don't hit the marble! <br>
Like breath or a balloon, I'm rising, <br>
I hover six inches in the air <br>
in my blazing swan-egg of light. <br>
You think I'm not a goddess? <br>
Try me. <br>
This is a torch song. <br>
Touch me and you'll burn.
answers2: Maya Angelou, Elizabeth Barett Browning and Emily Dickinson
all have some really beautiful poetry. Just give 'em a Google search
and you can probably find an anthology of all of their poetry, as well
as some other women poets. <br>
<br>

Lyrics vs. Poetry?
answers1: Lyrics go to a specific song but poetry comes from that persons heart
answers2: confusing factor. query using yahoo. just that might help!
answers3: lyrics are poetry put to music. the reason most people
understand lyrics better is that most poets try to use different ways
to communicate the same idea in poetry.
answers4: hmm. You can think of lyrics as free verse poetry. Free
versing is a form of poetry that does not implement any pattern
(stanza, meter, rhyme sceme, etc..). I would think that lyrics would
be easier to understand than poems. The writer would have a lot more
freedom writing free verse/lyrics, as opposed to the rigid form and
unchanging meters of a poem. <br>
<br>
Also this is just my opinion, but i think poems are much more
antiquated than lyrical devices. The fact that most of the best poets
in history date back hundreds of years really contributes to the fact
that we have a harder time understanding it. Why? mainly because the
language back then isn't used in modern times. People who lived back
in Shakespeares' times probably had an easier time understanding what
he wrote. <br>
<br>
Another thing. People tend to be more exposed to music than poetry.
They also find music more appealing. This might be a reason why more
people understand music better.
answers5: I need a good balance of the two. No matter how great the
lyrics are, if the beat and guitar sucks, I just can't listen.
Likewise, no matter how fabulous the accompaniment, if the lyrics are
dumb (and we've all heard those songs that make NO sense), I can't be
bothered to listen... Besides, I rarely just listen. I have to sing
along...
answers6: The major difference is audience. Lyrics are written for a
mass audience of people with disposable cash. Poetry is written for
an audience that understands literature. Obviously one is much larger
than the other. <br>
<br>
Because of that initial difference, lyrics often times depend on
cliche and less grammatically correct language in order to keep the
beat. I poetry cliche is frowned upon as being lazy and grammatically
incorrect language is laughed at UNLESS it is cleverly deliberate and
is a device to make a point.

philosophy major?
answers1: I am a graduate of Philosophy. We studied, Philosophy of
God, Universe, Religion, Philosophical Psychology, Philosophy of
State, Philosophy of Morals, Logic, Philosophy of knowledge etc.
Everything we studied always deals with reasoning. Like, proving God's
existence through reason. In Philosophy of State, we studied
communism. Very interesting...
answers2: Bong's got it as far as the usual Western education
curriculum.. It might be wise to supplement "the usual" with some
review of Eastern thought and metaphysics -- provides a far more
balanced view and approach. Especially since the West is besotted by
"reason" and the East leans a bit more toward consciousness
experience. <br>
<br>
I would suggest adding the "psychology of meditation" plus
experiential practices, for example. And researching such schools of
thought as esoteric Buddhism, Daoism and Shinto. Not to mention Vedic
studies -- a mindblower. Reason/logic can take you only so far in
realizing "the Truth" --which, of course, is what philosophy is all
about. The Eastern disciplines will take you the rest of the way :))

philosophy?
answers1: To Hell with that! I can't even read it, let alone pronounce
it. Ther's a lot of prejudice in that from of language. Keep it Simple
Sisters. Teach your babies not to study war or play war games. No
matter what their Daddies want!!!
answers2: Russell has a good quote on this: We may note one peculiar
feature of philosophy. If someone asks the question what is
mathematics, we can give him a dictionary definition, let us say the
science of number, for the sake of argument. As far as it goes this is
an uncontroversial statement... Definitions may be given in this way
of any field where a body of definite knowledge exists. But philosophy
cannot be so defined. Any definition is controversial and already
embodies a philosophic attitude. The only way to find out what
philosophy is, is to do philosophy. —Bertrand Russell, The Wisdom of
the West
answers3: Hegel's philosophy is generally perceived as being that of
Absolute Idealism: a combination of both Subjective and Objective
philosophy.. <br>
<br>
While I could probably give you enough insights to be able to fool
your teacher into believing you actually acquired the knowledge on
your own I would think the ghosts of Hagel, Kant, Rousseau and my
grandpappy would not approve. <br>
<br>
Hagel was too cool to be shortchanged by faked knowledge. <br>
<br>
I will give you one tip: Try typing in a search for 'History Of Ideas'
and see if that will help you with your shortcut to knowledge. There
is a wonderful published book called 'Dictionary of The History Of
Ideas' that may still be in print that should help you.
answers4: I'm not to familiar with the hegelian idealisms, but I'm
suggesting that you go wikipedia...unless anybody wants to answer
this?
answers5: Just ask yourself ... what good will it do to know the
answer to your question ?
answers6: Gosh what a mouthful, I haven't a clue so I can't sorry! <br>

What are the best performing arts summer camps?
answers1: Hi -- I direct Camp Ballibay in Camptown, PA. We are a fine
and performing arts camp with programs in theater, music, and dance.
Our philosophy is individual choice (every camper has his or her own
schedule), and non-competitive. We are an intense arts environment,
but most of our campers are interested in the arts because they enjoy
them, not necessarily because they want to pursue them professionally
(although some eventually do). The camp was established in 1964 by my
parents, and I direct it now with dancer and choreographer Kristin
Fieseler. Kristin and I are both professional artists and educators,
and we hire great counselors and train them well. There are lots of
reviews of Ballibay on the web, and you can meet a lot of campers on
the camp's facebook page and ask them questions.

what are the benefits of performing arts?
answers1: It is fun.
answers2: http://www.quotationspage.com/subjects/music/ in this page
there are a lot of quotation about music..look at it! <br>
http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/s/stella_adler.html in this
page there are quotations of stella adler..it's more for acting than
for music but it's a good job! <br>
I hove to be helpful for you! bye
answers3: Social benefits <br>
<br>
There are significant social benefits to getting involved in music,
dance and drama. The most obvious benefit is that these performing
arts are now woven into the fabric of our society - an important form
of entertainment that encourages people to come together and enjoy,
discuss or participate in the arts. Getting involved yourself, or
encouraging your children to take dance classes or drama lessons will
open doors socially and will allow you or your children to make new
friends more easily, after all a key to drama and music is
communication. It will also help you to get out into your local
community, meet a varied group of people from different backgrounds,
and keep you busy in your spare time. <br>
<br>
Personal benefits <br>
<br>
There are many personal benefits to getting involved with dance and
drama, particularly for people who are shy or lack confidence, as one
of the main benefits is that performing arts boost your confidence.
Performing in front of a large, or even a small crowd can be very
daunting but during rehearsals you will grow in confidence as your
skills improve and you will be able to use this newfound confidence in
every aspect of your life. <br>
<br>
In addition, getting involved in the performing arts can also
encourage your enthusiasm to shine through. If you are lacking
enthusiasm in other parts of your life then getting involved in
something you feel passionately about will give your enthusiasm a much
needed boost and give you something to look forward to. <br>
<br>
As stated earlier, communication is a key part of what makes
performing arts a success, whether it's the actor communicating with
the audience, the director communicating with the actor or the
choreographer communicating with the dancer, their jobs will only work
together successfully if everyone communicates. Therefore getting
involved in dance and drama will certainly help to improve your
personal communication skills. <br>
<br>
There is also evidence to suggest that getting involved in music,
dance and drama can improve your intelligence levels because you learn
so many new skills, and where scripts are concerned you are likely to
learn new words and general knowledge. There are also spiritual and
psychological benefits because dancing and acting encourages
self-discipline, diligence, self-expression, calmness, and fulfilment.
<br>
<br>
So now you've heard the reasons why the performing arts are good for
you, why not check out our online directory to find a ballet class,
dance lesson, or drama group you can join. <br>

Do you think ethnic studies are vital to understanding all events in history?
answers1: Yes. Because history of a different race or culture of the
same event gives you a different perspective. <br>
<br>
I hate the kind of history taught in school were its all patriotic and
justifies its wrongs rather than examine them. <br>
<br>
At least with ethnic studies you learn things that you'll never learn
in a regular history class (well, depending on the teacher that
is...). <br>
<br>
I think it is important because it gives you the missing piece to the
puzzle to understanding an event.
answers2: In some ways yes, you have to have an understanding of the
culture of the people your learning about before you learn about how
people are in a specific situation. It also applies to specific
situation though, not in all events. It is also important to remember
to teach Ethnic Studies in a purely unbiased manor.
answers3: Yes. You dont understand the history unless you understand
the culture(s).
answers4: When learning about any specific race in history, ethnic
studies is useful because each has it's own history in how it
developed and created the society those people live in and by. <br>
<br>
However, if you haven't studied ethnic studies and you go into history
that's okay too as history as a whole is really about the people
(seeing as they created everything they live be) thus being ethnic
studies. History at some degree is ethnic studies and vise versa.
<br>
<br>
Is it vital? It depends on how your undertaking history. <br>
Yes, if you want to study history to a high intellectual level. <br>
No, if your just briefly learning about an aspect from history. <br>
<br>
In gest to what I said previously, if you want to understand history,
ethnic studies will just splice and integrate within the subject as a
whole so separating History and ethnic studies is futile as the two
are really one.
