Collin Pelfrey: 3ds Max. i am using it and it's great. is generally for 3d g! aming. Maya, which is also made by 3ds max, is for 3d movies industries.
Libby Berkovitch: Depends on what you want. For free, fun stickfigure animations, use Pivot. For expensive, endless animations, use Flash. For landscape animations, use Terragen. For those with some programming knowledge, use Alice. All are, in my experience, pretty functional.

Jesse Japak: 3D's Max is fantastic, but expensive. Autodesk (company that makes 3D's Max) offers Maya Personal Learning Edition for free. I believe it can do animation.
