Blaine Connett: The FCC is still weary of potential problems that cell phones can cause to navigation beacon transmissions with interference. Also, having a bunch of people talking away on their cellphones while on a flight can get pretty annoying and also they want you to use the satellite pay phones on the back of the airliner's seats to make calls.
Mitzie Clough: You're right. Airplane instruments are VERY well-shielded, and cell phones only put out a fraction of a watt of power. However, there's really no way to be ABSOLUTELY certain that there's no signal leakage to a system that is crucial, so they simply don't allow cell phones to be switched on (except to flight mode). Flight mode switches off the radios in the phone, and effectively turns them into PDA/game machines.
Joesph Smithmyer: while YOU may believe that cell phones do not cause harm, the FAA and the FCC do, and they are who you need to believe.HOWEVER....Cell phones are designed for ground ! use, cell tower antennas are down tilt antennas and designed for maximum gain below the horizon. When you are five miles up, the antenna is not looking for you and the result would be no cell service. Once you reach a lower level, closer to the ground, you would be into too many sites, and overload the system, again, no cell service....Show more
Betsey Copp: They did a Myth Busters episode on this and I believe they were able to disrupt some of the plane instruments. If there's any question about it, then why would you risk everyone's lives? Keep the cell phones off.
